Glenn Page, President
Glenn is the "Professor X" of the SustainaMetrix Team. He has over 25 years experience in ecosystem approach and adaptive management, working primarily on coastal/ocean/watershed issues. In 2001 he was awarded the title of "Environmental Hero" by U.S. Vice President Al Gore. At SustainaMetrix he leads an interdisciplinary team in ongoing consultancies in ecosystem science and research, policy, education, economics and multi-media communications. He has a long list of professional experiences building programs from ground up and leading their design, implementation and evaluation. Recent work includes developmental evaluation of the Ocean Carbon Biogeochemistry program located at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Tufts Institute of the Environment at Tufts University, external review of the University of Maine's Aquaculture Research Institute. Glenn has pioneered methods for assessing the development and implementation of University PhD programs designed to promote interdisciplinary research funded by the National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) programs. In 2015, he is leading several projects including work with the Republic of Ireland on marine policy, renewable energy and sustainable aquaculture.
Stephen Olsen, Senior Advisor
Stephen is the "Wise Old Owl" recognized internationally as a leader in the theory and practice of the ecosystem approach and governance response to ecosystem change. Over the past four decades he has worked with leaders from countries around the world to address issues that matter most to the people of the place. For over 35 years he led the Coastal Resources Center at the University of Rhode Island and currently serves as its Director Emeritus. Recent activities with SustainaMetrix span the analysis of the governance dimensions of environmental conservation and restoration in the Chesapeake Bay Region for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and an assessment of capacity building needs for coral reef management in seven US jurisdictions for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Stephen understands the drivers of coastal ecosystem change and the planning, policy formulation and adaptive implementation needed for a courses of action. He has developed simplifying conceptual frameworks on the fundamental principles of ecosystem stewardship that has led to formally adopted governmental programs, technical reports, handbooks and peer reviewed articles prepared with teams of colleagues from the international community.
Jane Page, Writer, Editor & Videographer
Jane is the resident videographer, editor and writer for the SustainaMetrix Team. Her contributions began with the launch of SustainaMetrix in 2007 and continues today supporting field projects in Africa, Caribbean, Europe, Pacific, North and South America. She has 30 years of video production experience including public television stations in Washington DC and Maryland, and as a producer of marketing videos for non-profits from Maryland to Maine. She directs and produces all of the SustainaMetrix video projects to tell the story of response to ecosystem change.
Sam Matey, Anthropocene Researcher & Analyst
Sam Matey holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Southern Maine. He has worked as a volunteer research assistant for the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership’s forest restoration program in Kianjavato, Madagascar, and served as co-lead writer in the strategic evaluation of the Oak Foundation Marine Conservation Sub-programme. He has extensive data analysis, document review and editing, citizen science, technical writing, science journalism, ArcGIS, and literature review skills. Ed Harlow, Composer, Musician & Educator
Saxophonist, composer, educator Ed Harlow has been based in the greater Boston area since 1987. He has toured the US, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, France and the Caribbean with groups such as The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Artie Shaw Orchestra and Volo Volo de Boston. Mr. Harlow has also performed with notable artists such as Tony Bennett, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis and Paquito D'Rivera. Harlow has fifteen publications with Advance Music and his third recording as a leader is due in 2017. Mr. Harlow has been a clinician/performer at the Panama Jazz Festival since 2014. Ed brings to SustainaMetrix the lyrical, cultural and artistic side of the work of responding to ecosystem change. If we are to work together and transform systems, we need methods that feature improvisation, harmony and rhythm.
Beth Greenland, Leadership Coach
Beth is at the forefront of adult development. She is a top-notch leadership coach who works with highly successful people in senior leadership positions so they can become even more effective in the face of increasing complexity. Transformation is her superpower, as she has over 30 years of practical experience, working with leaders across sectors with particular focus on ecosystem restoration and helping them to lead diverse, interdisciplinary teams into into the emerging future. "Life changing" is a common description of people who have worked with Beth and attended her workshops and trainings in Adult Development Theory, Somatic Coaching, Presence-based Coaching and Emerging Leaders. She is on faculty at Georgetown University and serves as an end of life doula as well, companioning others toward their final journey.
SJ Oh, Business Development
There are few things in this world that elude the imagination and expertise of SJ Oh. Formally trained in chemical engineering he has experience in the military, has an MBA from the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University and currently helps the Emerging Technology Center (ETC) grow a wide range of tech-based companies. SJ started with SustainaMetrix as an intern and was soon working in all aspects of projects and program development. SJ has participated in numerous field expeditions with SustainaMetrix across the globe either in person or as a primary logistics support from the headquarters at Johns Hopkins University at Eastern.
Fritz Holznagel, Editor
Ryan "Fritz" Holznagel is an Emmy-winning writer with special interests in environmental issues and high tech. He has written for clients including SustainaMetrix, Google, Tendril, Intuit, Ooyala and Eventbrite. He was a Google employee from 2004-09 and continues to freelance for the company; in 2012 he helped Jim Lecinski write the celebrated marketing ebook The Zero Moment of Truth. Fritz won the Emmy Award in 1992 for scripting the CBS TV special A Claymation Easter Celebration. He is also the winner of the 1995 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions and has returned for champions' tournaments including the 2014 Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades. Fritz regularly participates in SustainaMetrix field projects including a coral reef management capacity assessment in Puerto Rico in 2012 and work in Woods Hole for the external review of the Ocean Carbon Biogeochemistry program in 2014.
Ellen Harasimowicz, Photographer
Ellen has been a freelance photographer for more than ten years with the Boston Globe and her work has appeared in the Washington Post, Scientific American, Down East, and Audubon Adventures. Other clients include Volvo Penta, World Vision, and several private schools including Colorado College and the Winsor School. Her work has taken her to Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa, Costa Rica, and Mexico. In 2008, Ellen teamed up with author Loree Burns to illustrate children’s science books that address environmental issues. The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastrophe (© 2010, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) was awarded the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize in 2011 and Citizen Scientists: Be a Part of Scientific Discovery From Your Own Backyard (©2012 Henry Holt) won the prize in 2013. Her newest books are Beetle Busters: A Rogue Insect and the People Who Track It (©2014, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), and picture book Handle With Care: An Unusual Butterfly Journey (©2014 Millbrook Press). Ellen is a member of the American Society for Media Photographers (ASMP), the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). In 2011, Ellen travelled to Ghana with SustainaMetrix where she photographed the on-going projects there and led workshops on photography.
Alan Furth
Alan is a social ecologist with a career dedicated to leveraging education in its broadest definition, to contribute to personal, community, and environmental health. With degrees in Child Development and Experiential Education, he has taught at every level, from early childhood through high school, in rural Maine public schools, and at the undergraduate and graduate levels as a member of the leadership and faculty of Lesley University’s Audubon Expedition Institute. In 1999, he and a team of community members established the Cobscook Community Learning Center in Trescott, ME. He is a coalition and bridge builder. These skills and his lifetime commitment to “place” and CCLC’s broad social-ecological work grounded in easternmost Maine make him an important member of the SustainaMetrix Team.
